It's now 1am, in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, and I have spent the last hour browsing your pages of Bolton. (My home town) Thanks for providing this wealth of information, along with the photos. There is a whole set of memories that flood back on seeing these pictures and facilitate reminiscing with the familiar names. I shall return to see more. Thanks for this great site

I would like to appear in guestbook. I was at turton high school between 1974-1979, and it could be a good way of finding out what happened to o the pupils/friends.
My husband's TAYLOR, WINTERBOTHAM/WINTERBOTTOM, BENNISON, BONNEY, HOLME, WOODHEAD & ROBINSON families were in Bolton. I'd like to contact others with these family names in Bolton. Regards, Denyse Bonney in Townsville, Queensland
Liked the site brought back a few memories...does anyone out there have the address for the Dog and Partridge web site (bottom of bank st/manor st). I have tried in vain to find it here. I spent the best part of 15 years in there as my regular watering hole. I too was at Turton high school between 74 -79 but I live in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada now.
Thanks in anticipation.

I have just been browsing the Bolton website and must congratulate you on the wealth of info. I lived on Derby Street from 1951-1964 and attended Hayward Bilateral School from 1957-64. This could be a great source of contact for Old Haywardians.

Loved looking at the old pictures of Bolton and Bradshaw. My name is Mark Bradshaw and I was born in Bolton 13th April 1958 at the Farnworth Hospital. My family emigrated to Australia March 1963 via the P&O ship Himilaya, but still have some relys back in Bolton and surrounding area. I now live in Brisbane, Queensland. My dad and grandfather ran the printing business, W BRADSHAW & SON at 157 Derby Street, Bolton up until 1963. I took my family back to Bolton to visit in 1990 and there is a block of flats now at 157 Derby Street, but our old house was still there. Thanks for the memories.

My name is Stephen Szabo. I live in New York City. I first visited your website in July 2000. It was the first time in 40 years that I saw pictures of my hometown.
I was so excited by the website that in October 16 to 23, 2000 my wife, my sister, and I took a trip to Bolton for a week's visit. I used my boyhood memories to find our way around the town. Nothing much has changed. We found our parents' house in Bennetts Lane, and found St. Joseph's church and the school, although it has fallen in disrepair. We stayed with old friends that we had lost touch with for all the years since we left. I had sent emails to the Bolton Evening News website and renewed contact with them.
During the week we were in Bolton, we visited the office of the Bolton Evening News and we were interviewed by a reporter about our visit. The story appeared in the next day's edition.
We recalled many of the streets we walked in or drove in from the wonderful photos from your website.
I would like to say that it was your website which caused us to make the visit that we had been thinking about for the past 40 years.
What a brilliant site you have. I am researching my husband's ancestry - the ROTHWELL's of Clifton and Kearsley. Coming across your site quite by accident I was thrilled to see the wonderful photos of Kearsley especially the Ringley Chapel, where many of his ancestors were buried. Our other Surnames from Kearsley and Clifton are ECKERSLEY, THORNLEY and ELLISON. I have bookmarked your site for future.

Just came across your WebSite while searching for something completely different! Why? Well, I happen to live in Bolton, Ontario, (I'm originally from Hoddesdon, Herts and my Mum was a very proud Liverpudlian!) and gravitate towards anything "Boltonish"! A great site - maybe we can do something along those lines too, here in exploding Bolton, NW of Toronto. Care to give us some tips? Congratulations!

I just had to add a few lines to this guestbook. My grandparents left Bolton after they were married in 1900. I would love to know if I still have family there and suspect that I do. The family names are Holt and Jolly. I know these are probably very common names there but any information would be appreciated.

My name is Andy Charlton. I emmigrated to Canada in 1985 ( Kitchener ), & looking at the pictures brought back some great memories of my home town. I was back a couple of years ago & couldn't believe the changes so the before & after photo's helped a lot. I left Castle Hill High school in 1978 to join the R.A.F. My family still lives in Bolton but I have lost contact with a lot of old friends. I also changed my name from Spragg to Charlton (sorry dad) So anyone that remembers me can drop me a line. What a great site.
I am interested in the Queen's Theatre, Farnworth, which would have been built c.1890s. It is believed my 2x Gt Uncle owned this theatre. His name was T Morton Powell. Can anyone provide more information please?
Many thanks
I have just come across your latest Guestbook pages.
I am researching my Briscoe family around Bolton and also my Grandmother's family (POUNDER). Any information would be very gratefully received. We have traced back to 1773 but all that I have further back than that is some similar names in the general Bolton and Leigh area at the end of the 17th Century.

Greetings from Oz,
As a young lad, 1939-1948, living in Tonge Moor, I used to walk along by the River Tonge with my grandfather. After my father was demobbed, he started work at Back o' th' Bank power station. Walking from the back of Castle Hill School, you could cross over the Tonge via a bridge. On turning left (turning right would take you up to Tippinge Road and through to Blackburn Road),you would be on a footpath behind Back o' th' Bank and parallel to the river. Looking across the river from the Back o' th' Bank side, you could see the rear of the Union Road mills. If I remember correctly, the first mills you came to were the Bolton Union Mills, then Dart Mill. Denvale Mill would have been closer to the junction of Union Road and Tonge Moor Road. Continuing down the footpath brought you out to Slater Lane then to Waterloo Street and Folds Road. I hope you don't mind the correction. Not the Croal but the Tonge. Keep up the good work, Alan Hughes, Narrawallee, Shoalhaven, NSW, Australia.
I have just aquired a boxed set of Antique Webley Revolvers. Inscribed on the barrel of these revolvers is the name: J Simpkin - Bolton. Also inscribed on them is Her Majesty's Royal Letter Patent.

Hi I am researching my husband's family GIBBONS. I have information Raphael GIBBONS was born in Bolton around 1838. He was married to Martha STEPHEN. They had two children, Joseph, born Feb.6, 1862 at 78 Parrot Street, Bolton, and Williams, born Clayton le Moors, 1864. Joseph emigrated to Canada and Williams married a Miss CARDWELL, either in or of England. He died 1908 and is buried in Church and Clayton le Moors cemetery. The father of Raphael supposedly owned some kind of mill in the area, and was know as "gentry". Anyone with further information on this family?

I am researching my family tree. I have many names with dates, but know little about them.
Robert Mason b.Abt1600 of Bolton, Lancashire, England He died 1644, Marston Moors, Bolton, Lancashire, England Robert Mason wed Hannah Uxor (b.abt1600) of same location. They had at least one child, Sampson Mason b.1625 Bolton, Lancashire, England and died 1676 Rehoboth, Bristol MA. Sampson married Mary Butterworth. I have info on Sampson that he came to Dorchester in 1649. He was in Rehoboth in 1657. He was buried in Rehoboth 1676. Called in Dragoon in Oliver Cromwell's Army.

From: Alan Tonge Sent: Wednesday, September 18, 2002 10:34 PM Subject: Help please!
Please can you place this on the Guest Book or point me in the direction of any local experts who may be able to help.
Please can anyone tell me what happened to 1529 Chorley Old Road? All odd numbers this high seem to have vanished! Were they demolished? if so, when and what is there now? Also, trying to trace the descendents of my Grandfather's siblings ( years of birth in brackets) : Rosanna Tonge (1881); Frederick Tonge (1884); Mary Jane Tonge (1888); Betsy Tonge (1889); John Tonge (1896); Lily Tonge (1897). If any of these people sound like your ancestors please get in touch! Rosanna and Mary certainly worked at the Bleach Works around the turn of the century.
According to a document from 1926, the address changes to 1529 Land Fold, which again doesn't appear to exist.
In 1941, aged 46, John Tonge was living at 27 Moss Bank Way which again is no longer there. Does anybody know whereabouts the numbers 1 - 100 on Moss Bank Way were or what happened to them and when?
Additionally, in 1941, my Great Grandfather Ralph Tonge died whist living at 36 Shackleton Grove. Originally a Coal Miner he was later a Groundsman at the local Golf Club. Does anybody remember him or know anyone that lived nearby?
Many thanks,
Alan Tonge Bristol
Hello, Molly and Geraldine - both have posted here, one from the USA, one from Mexico,
How easy it has become to find long-lost friends via the internet. I have now linked this site to my own, because I am so proud of Bolton and of the intensive work done here. Molly and Geraldine I had already found, but there are many more whose acquaintance I would love to renew.
I have spent hours on this site, every moment enjoyed and a great deal learnt about buildings and the origins of a town I consider to be one of the greatest places on the globe. Although I love Liverpool, I miss my hometown greatly; however, the missing of Bolton is probably what prompts me to write about it, though I do hope to buy a second home in Bolton one day.
I congratulate the webmaster on all he and his team have achieved here. For many who live abroad, this site is supremely important, as it allows them to "visit" whenever they feel the need. It is easier for me - I am only 40 miles away - but for those with oceans and continents separating their two homes. this facility is vital.
Thank you, Bolton. Ruth Hamilton, email address
Although I'm not as far away from home as most others appearing in this guestbook, I was very excited whilst visiting the Bolton site! I was born in Bolton in January 1964 and lived there until November 1976, when my mother died and I came here to live with my older brother in Berlin, Germany. My sister stayed in Bolton, so I therefore still visit Bolton from time to time (although not as often as I would like to...). Coming to Germany was quite a traumatic experience for me as a 12 year-old: I felt like a violently uprooted tree, seeing as everthing happend so suddenly. I've been here for 26 years now and feel at home in Berlin most of the time (I even became a German citizen in 1993). There are times when I do get quite sentimental though... I feel as if there are so many "loose ends" in my biography. Maybe somebody remembers me and would like to pick up one of these "loose ends" and contact me... I went to Chalfont Street County Primary School from 1968 - 1975 after which I went to Smithills Grammar School (unfortunately only for just over one year...). There I was in form 1a, my teacher was Mrs. Anthony. If any of this information rings a bell, let me hear it! Best wishes, Andrea Bolton (at least I still have my very special name!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------

I read some of the e-mails in your Bolton Guestbook and thought perhaps you might help me in tracing my Bolton ancestors.
There was a William Makant who died in 1797. He had sons William and Robert. Robert was a farmer and William took out a lease on the Gilnow Road Bleachworks. William's son carried on the trade as a bleacher, later becoming interested in local government and elected as the first Mayor of Bolton sometime in the mid-1800's.
I am interested in finding the birth date of Robert and also his marriage date; and to whom.
My gr. grandfather, William, born 29 August 1839 in a part of Bolton known as Halliwell.
Any information about the MAKANT family will be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance, Glenna M. Peach

Thankyou for your excellent web site bringing back many happy memories.I am seeking information about a serious accident which occurred on Chorley Old Road Horwich between the wars (1930's?) when a coal lorry ran away on the hill and knocked down and killed a young boy and his grandmother. This woman was my grandfather's aunt. Her maiden name may have been Williams and it is likely that the boy's father worked at the railway works. The family of the little boy lived on Chorley Old Road at the time.My mother would love to get in touch with the remaining family some of whom may still be in the area. The other is a bit of contemporary history. Sadly Chorley Old Road URC (Congregational) Church closed its doors for the last time at the end of February.Best wishes Valerie Humphreys.
My wife - Margaret Amy McDowell is a relation of Samuel through her mother Marjorie Crompton who was born in 1904 to Lewis and Amy Crompton. She married Henry Frazer and had 4 children; John Lewis, Mary, Kathleen Joyce and Margaret Amy.

We are trying to get information about both the Wilcocks (Wilcox) and the Bradleys ,,, both families were established in Bolton or surrounding areas, e.g. Darcy Lever, Chorley, Astley Bridge ( where I was born, 1939). Laurence Wilcock (Wilcox) married Margaret Annie Bradley in about 1905 (?)... Any Info regarding these families, however trivial, would be appreciated. Thanks Brian.
Hi
I was born in Canada but my mum (Sonia) I believe grew up in Horwich. Her maiden name is Whysall. Her grandfather, Mr. Robert Blakemore, was a principle at Horwich Technical College around 50 to 60 years ago. Does that place still exist? For some reason at the moment I cannot think of anyone's names! Oh dear. My mum's mum went by Jean (one of her middle names) and got married to a guy named Bernie (nickname) Whysall. Jean is one of the daughters of Robert. Jean had a sister named Betty that passed away not to long ago. They had a few brothers - one was Freeman. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of him or the family or anything!
Thanks Ruth Anne Callin-Berry (name in entry corrected by request December 2003)

I am trying to trace the family line - however the only information I have is my father's and grandparents names: SYKES Ethel & Samuel and my father John. I do not have any dates or places of birth. I think they were all born in Bolton - my father John would have been born around 1918. They moved at some time to Wallasey, Chesire.
If anyone could help me trace my family or show me where to go for information I would greatly appreciate it.
Thankyou Brenda Owen (SYKES) My personal email address is bjowen@hypermax.net.au.dele.te
Hello. Although myself or my family do not come from Bolton, my mother has recently told me that my great, great grandfather, James Farrow was once the mayor of Bolton and that his son, also James Farrow was a player in the first team at Bolton Wanderers. Apparently his career was ended when his eye was kicked out with a bad tackle ? and the Mayor ended his own life because of a scandal involving his mistress ? Does anyone know of James Farrow or his son of the same name ? It must have been a long time ago. I'm guessing my great granddad played for Bolton in the 1920's ? I'd be very interested to hear anything. Many thanks, Cathy Newton.
Hi, I have before me a family history sheet of members of the Rothwell family going back to early 1800's in UK. Part of that family moved to Tasmania later in 1800's. (John Rothwell)

Would like to hear from you if you feel there may be some connection. Crouch family are also involved.

We are tracing our family. The Wilcocks were well established in the Chorley area, and we know they were owners of property. We are looking to the 1700s and links with NEW SPRING at Whittle le Woods, and Wilcock's Farm in Rivington. Wilcock's Farm, of course, is well known, but we have no information either of New Spring farm or the Wilcocks of that era. The Wilcock's may even have a link with the Leicester area at that time. Any information, however trivial, would be appreciated. Brian

I'm currently trying to trace my father's side of my family and am looking for members of the Jerams family. My father was adopted around 1945/1946 although met his birth mother (LILY JERAMS) shortly before her death in Febuary 1979. She lived her whole life and died in Bolton. Apparently Lily's father was the mayor of Bolton at some point and so any info on mayors etc during the 1930's and 1940's would be very helpful. Claire, North Wales.
Dear sir/madam, Further to my recent e-mail, I am still trying to find information about my father's family. I would be very grateful for any info on the Jerams family. Does anyone know of an Alfred Samuel Jerams and/or an Annie Jerams (formerly Annie Sneddon) who lived in 20 Abernethy Street around 1905? Alfred worked as a crane driver on the railways at the same time. They had two children - Lily Eliza and Alice Eva- but Annie may have had other children to Alfred's brother! Thanks in advance... Claire
Trying to research the date of construction and anything interesting about St.Stephens Church.
My husband went to Kearsley Elementary School in Flint Mich. The school was named after Major Jonathan Kearsley who came to the USA in the mid 1700's.
This information would be for notes about the life of Major Kearsley and where he lived prior to coming the USA.
I am a British Citizen living in the USA over 30 yrs. I lived all my early years in Warrington and attended Widnes Technical College before embarking for the USA.
Any information you can share will be most appreciated.

I am a grandson of Ellis Crompton Woodall and Ellen (nee Almond)Woodall. Most of we descendents have Crompton as our middle name. I have been told that we are descended from Samuel Crompton. I would like to verify this if possible, and see where we fit into his family tree. My Grand parents children are: Annie, Florence, Hilda, Ivy, Ellis, Stanley , Thomas(my Father), and Harold. There was also an older daughter who was adopted by a brother of Ellen. They all were born and lived in Bolton. They lived at 99 Ashley lane, Ashley bridge, when Ellis died in 1911, he was 43 years old. Buried with Ellis is Adam Crompton Woodall ( I think maybe Ellis's brother) he was buried 1923, he was 64 years old. I would appreciate any help given.
Thank you

I have just been enjoying you excellent site and was wondering if you could assist me in closing a gap in my family tree. I have managed to trace my family back to Samuel Crompton's Great Granddaughter Ester, who was my Great Grandmother. However I have been unable to finalize the intervening 2 generations and would be grateful for any assistance you could give me in this regard.

My name is Candyce Crompton. I have a blanket that was with Samuel Crompton's picture on it, with a picture of his family house, the spinning mule and the family crest. It belonged to my father, Alfred Stanley Crompton. It was passed down to him from his father, John Stanley Crompton. My grandfather and my grandmother were both from Bolton. They immigrated to Hamilton Ontario, Canada sometime around 1903-1907. I was told we were related to Samuel, but I don't have the family tree to know exactly how.

A nice resource you have on the web. Our family originated in Bolton and Ashley Bridge and they left to come to the USA in the late 1840's. I would like to put together some historical information about the area they lived in during that time including maps if available from 1800-1850, social life, work life, etc. Any resources any one has would be greatly appreciated. I've been trying for months to obtain information on the old house on Bury Road - also known as Rough Clough house (number 796) and is currently attached to a dentists surgery (K.Withers and Co) I've trawled through all the history pages I can find including those on the Breightmet web site but to no avail. There seems to be little or worse - no information regarding the history of this building. Can anyone help? It would be particularly interesting to hear from anyone who lived in the Breightmet area after 1812 up to the present day with any info at all on the house and its history. Thankyou. Any correspondence would be greatly appreciated via the following email address: zwilly82@yahoo.co.uk
I used to live in Bolton (was born there in 45)went to school there in the 50's and worked there until the early 60s. My very first job was with an Accountants (Mather, Kay and Hudson)I think on a very old cobbled street (I cannot remember the name - some ... Lane). They moved to Exchange Street, in the building shown on the web site. The name of the company changed to Pannel, Fitzpatrick, Graham and Crewdson(I think that is right). The man I worked for was called Bell and he was a partner of a Mr. Sharrocks, with Mather Kay and Hudson. I often wonder what happened to them and if they are still around, I guess they would be really old... I am now 58! I used to love my job there, until I moved down to London and now I live in Canada - Victoria, BC.

Hi Came across your web site via Chadwick Association. I am looking for my family who are Chadwicks. I don't know if you can help me. I believe the Chadwicks I am looking for are from Bolton and had the Chadwick Cotten Mills in the 1800's. I have found on the internet a James Chadwick and Brother Cotten Mill (Eagley Cotten Mill) in Bolton. My Great-Great-Grandfather was John or Jonathan Chadwick who married I believe Betty Cameron. My Uncle told me that he thinks John or Jonathan remarried. I don't know how many children they had but my Great Grandfather was Jonathan Chadwick born abt 1850. He came to Australia and married in 1880. I believe there is a book on A Boltonb Mill Village The Eagley Story , also a book The cotton mills of Bolton 1780-1985 but don't know if it gives information on the Chadwick family. I hope someone may be able to help me. Regards Kaye Mount (Australia)
I am originally from Farnworth and I am trying to research a local mill owning family in Farnworth. My father tells me that the Barnes family founded one of the first spinning mills in Farnworth and gave Farnworth Park to the town. I have two oil paintings signed John Barnes 1923 - I believe these could have been painted by a member of the Barnes family - can anyone help with this?

Hi there,
Well done mate, what a great site.
My name is Gerald Atherton Kirk, I was born in Farnworth 14th January 1953. My father, George Atherton Kirk, had a small printing business in farnworth for a short time in the mid 1950's. My Grandfather, Harry Kirk also had a printing business in Bolton.
We Moved to Radlett for a short time, then emigrated to New Zealand in 1957 on the "Captain Cook", when I was 4 years old.
I discovered this website while researching for a proposed trip to the UK. It will be my first trip back, and your site has been a great source of motivation. Thank you.
My grandfather was the only close family member left behind, we did not keep in touch, and he has since passed away. So there is very little to work with in the way of family ties. I am looking for info on family names of, Kirk Atherton & Childs.

Hi, I am researching a Thomas Leaver (Lever) of Bolton. He was born in Bolton and enlisted in the 48th Regiment of Foot at Salford, Lancaster on 11 June 1811, aged 13 years 215 days for unlimited service.
Thomas fought in the Peninsula Wars and earned 5 clasps. The Regiment the men were stationed in Ireland, where I am assuming he met and married his wife, Bridget. They came to Australia on the Matilda in 1817 and the Regiment stayed in NSW until 1824. It seems he and Bridget parted after they had one child, Ann, who now has many descendants in Australia.
He was discharged 3 February 1829 at Bellary, India. Reason for discharge : chronic opthalmia - impaired vision in both eyes.
Thomas was formerly a weaver. He was not literate - he signed his discharge papers with an X. His papers state that he was 5'41/2" in height with fair hair and grey eyes. His discharge papers state he was a private, although an entry in New South Wales states he was a trumpeter.
I have purchased a death certificate for a Thomas Lever who died in Bolton on 9th July 1850 - his army pension indicates he died in July 1850 - but this gives no information other than the fact that he was a labourer and the informant was John Holt of Great Morr St., Great Bolton. It does state that he was 54 yo which seems at odds with the army information, but could have been a guess.
If anyone could throw any light on this person I would be extremely grate ful

In the course of my research into Burnage Hall I have discovered that it was built by a Miss Mary Whitehead who moved to Burnage from central Manchester. She was the daughter of Mr Whitehead who had a callico printing business at Breightmet in the late 18th and early 19th century. I believe her executor was a Thomas and possibly Joseph Whiteside.
Do you have any information on this family or do you know of anyone researching either the works or the family. If so I would be grateful to learn of it.

I'm doing research on my family tree. My Great(x4) Grandparents were Thomas and Maria Moore, born 1804. They were married at St. Peters on August 29, 1825. They had seven children, Mary, Thomas, Francis or James, Clement, Elizabeth, Joseph and Henry. In 1841, 20 year old Elizabeth, probably Thomas' sister lived with them, she was a cotton winder. They moved their family to the US in 1842. I would be interested in finding additional information or locating (very long lost) relatives. Col. Ron Moore Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA
Trying to follow up some family history, but getting really stuck with a great aunt of mine who lived in Mornington Road, Bolton. The problem is, I only know her maiden name, which was GARDNER, and despite her broad Lancashire accent (as I recall), I'm sure she was born in the London area, although I could be wrong. Her husband was called Fred and he died mid 1960's after a stroke. Flo died in the early 1970's. The only other thing I'm certian about is that they had someone, probablly a child, who lived in Canada. Flo went to visit this person or persons in 1970, and while there, made a visit to New York and visited the Empire State building! Any help would be very greatly received... David Allan.
First off - fabulous web site. I appreciate the visuals and wealth of history.
I am trying to locate relatives of my grandfather, Samuel Preston Jr. He was born in Bolton approx December 1897 and immigrated to Canada when he was just 16. At that point he faked his age on his Attestation Paper and joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force - and fought in WWI. After the war, he settled in Toronto, Canada. As my grandfather died when my own dad was just 12, I have very little information about this man. I do know that he lived at 18 Home Street in Bolton before leaving the UK - but that's it.
I know that this is quite a shot in the dark - but if these facts ring any bells with future web site readers - I would appreciate any information!!
Thank you!!

My grandparents emigrated from Bolton to New Zealand in 1920. I have recently seen a letter written to them by his mother sometime after they settled here. It is dated 31 May but no year is given. I am interested in finding out the year it was written and hope that someone with a knowledge of local history may be able to help. Here is a quote from the letter. "All the crofts and mills are closing down on account of the coal strike. Springfield is closed altogether. This is about the 9th week of the coal strike." Thanks for any help.

I was very interested to read your article on Elephants and the Elephant Trail. We have in our possession a large bronze elephant (3 foot long x 2 foot high) which was originally mounted on a hotel in our village. It was we were told brought from Bolton in the early 20th century by the Nicholson Family it was left to our charitable organisation recently in the estate of their daughter Joyce. Hi, I came across your wonderful site while researching my Great Grandfather, Robert Parry. Robert lived in Bolton approx from 1901 until his death in 1944 at the age of 84. He was listed in the census as a shopkeeper/greengrocer. My dad always said his family in Bolton ran a pub and that it was still there. Does anyone know if this is true? Rumor had it that the pub was called Parry's Pub. Robert married Margaret Ashworth & had at least three sons, Jordan, William and Frank (my grandfather) who all emigrated to Canada. There may also have been a daughter named Edna, but I don't know anymore about her. Thank you in advance for any information that may help with my research. Sincerely, Maria Parry Danaher Squired@ix.netcom.com
Jane Regent is one of my ancestors. In the 1881 Census she is registered as 20 years of age and unmarried, living in "Little Bolton." Does this district still exist? Also what really intrigues me is that her occupation is listed as "professional singer." Would this be an operatic singer? I am thinking of the Northern Tradition of "The Messiah" for instance. What would the employment possibilities be for a professional singer in the 1880's? A real mystery. Any thoughts and help would be gratefully received. I wonder what Great Aunt Jane sang and where? Thanks John

In researching my family tree it was noticeable that very few Hopes were shown in any records prior to about 1830. After that date there was a large influx. I have presumed that a lot of these were from the Leigh, Atherton areas, and also that it was probably the expansion of mining in the area. I have not been able to find anything on that and wonder if any readers or researches have information that might clarify the history or guide me to where I can find it?

Hello,
I was wondering if any one can help me with some local research. I have
been in Kenya recently researching the WW1 battlefields and in VOI
Cemetery is buried L/Cpl Richard Brockbank KIA 3 Sept 1915 whose parents
John and Alice lived at 184 Hall Lane Farnworth. He was one of 8 killed
that day in a shoot out with German African askari troops. Lt Dartnell
was also one of the eight and won a VC for his decision to stay behind
and assist the other seven wounded, regrettably all were shot. I would
be interested to know if any pix of Brockbank are available. Did he go
to Farnworth school ? Is he commemorated locally.
Thank you
Best wishes for 2006

Hello My name is Chris (Christine) Craghill nee Pink and I am searching
for any information, particularly a death date, of my gt grandfather
Joseph John Pink. On the 1881 census Joseph Pink and his family are
listed as living at 14 Manor St, Little Bolton, Bolton Lancs and
Joseph's occupation is a herbalist aged 32. Joseph was born in
Liverpool to George Pink and Mary Ann. Unfortunately I do not have an
exact date of Joseph Pink's birth and a baptism does not appear in the
IGI.
Joseph Pink married Eliza Ellen Croxford on 20th Sept 1865 in the parish
church of Liverpool, Liverpool, Lancs and at the time both he and Eliza
were living in Rose Place, Liverpool (no district given) and his
occupation then was Plasterer.
At the time of the 1881 census my granfather, John Pink was 5 yrs old
and he had an elder sister aged 8yrs and two younger brothers, Frederick
aged 3 yrs and Percy aged 8 months. Frederick seems to have died young
but Percy Pink lived a very eventful life and died in Toowoomba,
Queensland, Aus, in1955.
I have been told by my only surviving uncle Geoffrey Pink, that my gt
Grandfather Joseph Pink died young forcing young John Pink (my
grandfather) to go out to work at an early age. He went to work for
Lever Bros, ending up at Port Sunlight but I think it is possible he
worked for them before the opening of Port Sunlight. My gt grandmother
Eliza Pink also went to work for Lever Bros and became one the first
supervisors at Port Sunlight.
My granfather, John Pink, became a commercial traveller for Lever Bros
and met my grandmother Annie Ford when he was visiting Nottingham on
work at the turn of the century. John and Annie married in 1902 and
started what became the retail hosiery business of A Ford & Co or better
known as Fords with a borrowed five pound note and set up initially with
a market stall in Nottingham Market Place. This business is sadly now
no more but grew out of the first shop and market stall to become one of
the major budget retail clothing and household goods businesses in and
around Nottingham, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. My father, George
Pink and two of his brothers went into the family business as soon as
they were able.
My Uncle Geoffrey Pink, now nearly 80 yrs and myself, 64 yrs, have just
started trying to compile a history of the Pink side of our family.
My grandfather John Pink's birth certificate states that he was born
on14th April 1876 and that the family were at 14 Manor St, Little Bolton
and that his father Joseph Pink was a herbalist. (All the same as the
1818 census)
As stated earlier, I would very much like to know when Joseph Pink died.
Within the next few days I will try and look at the General
Registration Office Index at Colchester Library but thought in the
meantime that it was worth writing to you for some advice.
My address is:

Hoping you will be able to give me some information no matter how small
- such as where is Little Bolton in relation to Bolton and does Manor St
still exist?
Yours sincerely

Hello,
I found your web page, www.bolton.org.uk/samuelcrompton.html, very
interesting as I believe I am a descendent of Samuel Crompton (1753 - 1827)
My grandfather Frederick Ashley (1899 - 1957) was his great great grandson.
I would be interested in appearing on your website as a family member. I am
building my family tree and would appreciate any information you may have on
Samuel Crompton's descendents.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes

Hi,
Nice to see your website - I am trying to trace my family history and on my
mothers side (Partington) I have found that from 1750 - 1900 they were
Papermakers.
They started at Ringley, Radcliffe - moved to Collyhurst then onto Throstle
Nest in Stretford and then dispersed to Warwickshire, Kent and 3 of the
family to Ivybridge in Devon - where my grand father was born.
I have written about them on my website - and am always looking for new
information and photos - so will have a proper read of your site now!!
I am sure I will get back to you requesting permission to use some of the
details!!!
I believe from records of the Society of Papermakers that many of the
Partingtons were members - have been sent a partial list - and am looking
for details of dates when papermills were opened/closed - do you have
anything down - it is difficult to know sometimes what sort of "Mill" they
are talking about in books etc.
Cheers for now
Keith

Anyone recall a Florrie and George who lived in Bolton's Mornington
Road? I don't know which house number, but it wasn't very far from the
nearby Chorley New Road?
Flo's maiden name was probably GARDNER. Unfortunately, I don't remember
George's surname.

My father, John Henry Foster left Bolton for Canada in the 1920s. He had a
brother James who moved to Blackpool in the 1940s and a sister, Emily Worsley
who lived at 32 Shipley Ave. in 1950. I believe I have cousins living in
the Bolton area and I would love to be in contact with them. Some names are
Alan Foster born in 1932, Kenneth Worsley, son of Emily, George son of James,
and Frank Foster. I will appreciate any information at all about these people
or their descendants.

My name is Keith Eckersall and I am trying to trace back my Family history.
I know that my Great Grandfather was called Joseph Eckersall and was born
in 1841 in a place called Bosworth Barne. Has anybody heard of this place?
All I know is that it "was" in Lancashire. Joseph Eckersall had 5 children
Alice (1879), John (1865), Thomas (1873 & my Grand-father), Walter (1868)
and William (1876). My dad Cyril Eckersall was born 16/07/19 and went to
Bolton Grammar School. Is there anybody out there that remembers him? My
Grand-father Thomas was also Manager at Denvale Mill so any information of
there would be appreciated.
Thanks

Guestbook / Research - BAYLISS / ABBATT
A branch of my family were in Bolton from around 1865 to 1900. Frederick
BAYLISS was an accountant / draper / Wesleyan preacher, in 1881 living

Anne (BLENCOWE). Children: Frederick, Archibald (who also became a
preacher), Florence, Lily (who married Edward ABBATT - cane furniture
business and in 1881 lived at 2 Park Street, Little Bolton), Olive (my

who died at Gallipoli) and Edith. Anecdotal mention of LEVER family

Hello from Australia,
I have recently discovered that my husband's great grandfather (William
Henry ROBERTS) was born in Bolton in 1875. It has been suggested that his
father and uncle(s?) may have been involved in carving the lions at the town
hall. Is there any way I might be able to verify this? What I do know for
certain is that the ROBERTS brothers George Frederick, William Francis and
Isaac Augustus at least were Stone Masons. I would be very grateful for any
help.

I am looking for any knowledge of relatives of:
William Thompson who married Ann Payne in Bolton in approx 1880;
Mary Jaundrell who married Fred Morris just before 1900 (ran a grocers
shop) and had a son called Reginald born late 1899;
And lastly any information of 'Thompson's Chimney' in Bolton that was
part of either a glass works or more likely an iron foundry. This could
be mid to late 1800's.
All information greatly received.
Many thanks,

Can you help me please? I was born at Townleys Hospital in 1944,and I am
trying to locate a mill that my late mother worked in,she worked I
believe in a bobbin shed?
She always referred to it as"The French Firm",and the head lady was
known as Madame,I think it would have been around the 20s-30s,as when I
was born she was working as a bus/tram conductress for Bolton Transport
If you can help me,or put me in contact who can I would be very grateful.

Does anyone have information on Benjamin T Barton who was a reporter and
journalist for the Farnworth Chronicle. He was the author of three local
history books. He was born 1840 and died Dec.1896. He lived part of his
life at Farnworth with his wife Jane. I cannot locate his burial. Can
anyone help.
Hi,
My name is Nancy Reese and I am writing you from Texas, US. I found your email
address in the Bolton Revisited site and I am hoping you would assist me
with some historical info about a company in Bolton, probably in the early
1900's.
I am trying to research an antique Piano I own, but the online appraisal
seemed to know very little about the Brand. A UK Piano site said the company was established in 1905,distributed piano's and was a casualty of WW II. The piano is labeled as follows:
Walter Smith Co
102 Deansgate
Bolton
I reveiwed all of the Deansgate images on the museum site but did not see this shop. I saw an early photo of a Manchester furnishing on Deansgate but I was unsure of the date or #address. Do you
have any more suggestions for finding this information?
Do you know anything about this company or could you suggest someone who would
know?
I would appreciate any help you could provide. If you know of someone more
familar with this type of information, please feel free to forward this email.
Thank you,
Nancy Reese
Thanks for the fascinating site!
I have some more information about Fernclough - about which I have been
looking for some time. As far as I know it was a house built by John
Kynaston Cross in the mid-19th century and located somewhere off the
Chorley New Road. In the early 20th century it was bought by Edward
Peel Potter and in the 1920s became the Edmund Potter Hospital, which
closeed in 1976.
Is there any chance that anyone out there has any pictures of the
building? Or remembrances as to what it looked like? Is it perhaps
still standing? The only meagre description I can find describes it as
a "dour Victorian gothic place" - which just peaks my interest! - so I
am keen to find out more.
Many Thanks

Dear Sir /Madam
My Great great grandfather was Henry Baber. He was born In Compton
Martin in Somerset in 1817. He was Married To Rebecca and they came to
Lancashire between 1851 and 1861. In the 1871 census Henry is married to
Ann ? He is 54 and a Refreshment House Keeper, Living in 8-6 Churchgate
Bolton Lancashire. (Ye Olde Man and Scythe?) In the 1871 census Ann
aged 36 is also down as Refreshment House Keeper born in Bolton Livingin
8-6 Churchgate Bolton Lancashire.
Whilst I was in U.K. in Sept. I visited the archives but could find no
reference to Henry and Ann as being landlord and landlady of the Man and
Scythe. I can only think that they may have lodged there while they ran
their Refreshment house elsewhere. I would be grateful if you could shed
any light on this for me or perhaps let me know of somebody who may be
able to help me find out a little more about them.
Both my parents came from Bolton while I was born in Little Hulton. I
have recently retired to Barbados
Many thanks and kind regards
Margaret Blackman.

I have some information regarding Samuel Crompton's family tree, which I
hope may help others trying to trace their lineage. Samuel Crompton was
my 5th great grandfather, and fortunately, my birth in 1953 was the last
to be registered on the family tree, which was displayed in the
Hall'In'thWood Museum up until recently. The reason why I was added, was
that my birth coincided with the 200 year celebration of his birth in
1753, and a dinner was arranged in his honour, to which my Great
Grandmother - Mary Agnes Hyslop nee Randall attended. I myself, have
recently been in touch with a researcher from the museum and updated the
tree as far as my knowledge permits me. I'm sure if anyone else out
there has some other information regarding other branches of the family
tree, it may be of use to the Museum
I can briefly give a quick trace back from Samuel to myself, if it is
any use.
Samuel born 1753,-One of his sons-John born 1791,-Esther, his daughter
born 1825, -Mary, her daughter born 1857, Mary Agnes, Her daughter (my
great Grandmother) born 1844,-William, her son born 1908, - William,
his son (my father) born 1928, then myself Suzan born 1953.

I'm trying to find out information about the SHARPLES family in the early
1800's. My 3x great grandfather, JOSEPH SHARPLES, was born in Halliwell on
8, Sept. 1829. His mother is JANE LIVINGSTON (she was born in Scotland).
His step-father was John Haslam (of little Bolton). I am looking for his
biological father. Family lure says that Joseph was an illegitimate child
and his mother never would divulge the name of his father, because she
wanted to protect his identity. We believe his biological father to be
either WILLIAM or ISAAC SHARPLES, born sometime around 1796(?).
Any help in solving this family mystery would be very helpful.

Dear Sir,
I have been looking at your excellent web site and wonder whether
you can assist. I am researching my family history and have recently
discovered a relative OSBORNE, Gerald Carlton who died in Bolton 17 May
1982, and was cremated at Overdale Crematorium on 24 May, 1982. I will try
to contact the superintendent to find out more information unless you have
any ideas.
1. He was apparently an artist employed at times as a "poster
painter" despite contacting Bolton Archives they have been unable to help me
discover who he is most likely to have worked for in the area. Any thoughts?
2 He lived at 520 Halliwell Road, most of his life and I wondered
whether you have a picture of the house or road please?
Thanking you in anticipation, any scraps of information or advice
would be most welcome.

Dear Sir,
I am currently trying to trace my family history. My grandfather, Harry
TATTERSALL, was born in Bolton in August 1893, but was orphaned when his
mother, Tabitha TATTERSALL, died in 1899 and then his father, Richard
TATTERSALL, in 1900. I have found Harry in the 1901 Census livng at 40
Gilbert Street, Bolton, together with five brothers and sisters (the
eldest of these was 19 years old at the time).
Unfortunately, most of the older members of my family who might be able
to tell me anything have either died or aren't traceable, but I have
been given to understand that my grandfather was resident at the Eden's
Orphanage for a period of time. It is well within the realms of
possibility that his younger sister, Mary Jane (born 1894), was also
there. There is another brother, Richard, for whom I am still trying to
track down details, but my best information at the moment is only that
he may have been born in 1897. Since he was even younger, it is not out
of the question that he was at the orphanage too.
I was amazed to come across the details on your site, which I found very
easily. I am writing to enquire if you have any other details that
might be of interest to me and, in particular, whether any registers of
residents are still in existence.
thank you in advance for your attention to this matter, and I look
forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Alan Tattersall

Bolton and trying to trace Margaret Owen b.11.12.1909 and her brother

Dear Staff or visitors
I'm tracing for my family tree: Alice Gibson nee Hall (born about 1842,
Chirnside Scotland) and George Hall (born Gateshead, Durham, England)
whom both lived in Bolton, Lancanshire in 1901. Alice Hall was a grocer
and George Hall a tool fitter, at the time and they were in the fifties
on the latest census in Bolton. They married in 1870 with kids who had
left by this time on earlier census.
I would appreciate any information

Hi there,
Enjoyed looking through the site, brought back a lot of memories.
I am looking for any information I can find on the whereabouts of two
people. Their names are John Hartley who used to live on Adelaide Street
and Bobby Sharples who used to live on St. Helens Road.
My name is Mick Shuttleworth and I used to live on Euxton Street, Daubhill.
The two names are a couple of the lads I used to be friends with when we
were around 8 years old or so. We are all around the 60 year old mark now.
It would be great to get in touch with them again after all this time.
Used to swim regularly at Moss Street Baths as a youngster. Remember the
bloke lighting the gas lamps and the knocker upper too.
Moved from Daubhill to Tonge Moor when I was 11 years old.
I live in Canada now, moved here in 1999.
Hope someone can help with some information. Thanks in advance.
Mick.
I am a descendant of Samuel Crompton, or at least that is what has been said
within my family. I can only go back as far as Frederick Crompton b. 1848 -
my great grandfather.
Do you have any info connecting the two?
David.
Dear Sir,
For the past two years I have been trying to prove that the Richard
Lofthouse who served with the 15th Battalion The Welsh Regiment as Pte
20304 and then as Pte 63615 with the South Lancashire Regiment was my
grandfather. To change regiments was not at all uncommon and the fact
that this gentleman did indeed serve in these two regiments during the
Great War of 1914 - 18 is confirmed on his medal card held at the
National Archives in Kew.
My grandfather was born in Bolton in 1880, was married in 1901 to
Margaret Murphy and they had a son (my father) Harry in 1908. Richard
was a "master clogger" (a maker of clogs) and for a number of years,
1924 until 1937, he had a small sop at 23 Emmanuel Street in Bolton. He
died in 1940.
In 1915, Lloyd George was attempting to create a Welsh Army. He had
great success in cities like Cardiff and Swansea and in some of the
valley areas such as the Rhondda but in Carmarthenshire, a rural area,
he faced major recruiting problems simply because there were too few fit
males surplus to the needs of the agricultural economy in that area.
To compensate for this shortfall, more than three hundred young Bolton
men, all of them volunteers, were enlisted and formed a third of the
15th Battalion that were soon to move to France.
I have searched the archives in Bolton but have failed to find any
reference to them or their contribution.
I thought that perhaps someone on your excellent website might be able
to shed some light on this affair.

I originally to lived in Daubhill, then moved to Tonge Moor. I used to go
to St. Augustines Crypt Cats Club. I was wondering if anyone remembers it
or the group of lads and lasses known as the Den Vale Mob who used to dance
there. This would be in the mid 1960=92s, I was around 16 (1964) and the
Den Vale lads would have been probably late teens. They weren=92t a Mob a
s the term suggests, just a group of friends who I used to envy a little as
I was not old enough to be one of them. They wore the Teddy Boy drapes an
d had their =91bunches of grapes=92 and DA=92s like I could never achieve.
The girls had their full skirts and neckerchiefs and looked equally as goo
d. I often wonder what became of any of them, and if they are still in Bol
ton, and do they still dance?.
Just a thought. But if anyone knows any of this group, ask them about the
club and the dances. Oh the good old days!

I've been looking for an old friend for a while now. His name is STEVE
BYRNE. I have not seen him since 1963 when he was in the Royal Navy. Steve has a
brother Donald who was married at that time to Darlene. If anyone knows of his
whereabouts I would be very interested in catching up on the last 40 or so
years.
Thanks in advance,
Barb.
My brother, Flt. Lt. J.C.Garnett, was killed in the following accident.
Our family were from Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross, and I was lead to
believe that one member of the crew listed below was from Halliwell.
Does anyone remember him?
From 'The Price of Peace; A Catalogue of RAF Aircraft Losses Between
VE-Day and End of 1945' by Colin Cummings:
14 September 1945 PN305 Halifax VII 644 Sqn. Bolventor Cornwall. 21k.
The aircraft was en-route from its base at RAF Tarrant Rushton to the
Azores and was carrying a crew of 7 and 14 passengers. Due to an
electrical failure, the dingy inflation valve was activated and the
dingy blew up, came out of its wing stowage and fouled the tailplane
assembly, restricting the elevators The pilot lost control and the
aircraft dived into the ground. This was almost a repeat of an accident
reported earlier in the book. The local press reports and the initial
reports in the Accident Card, indicates that there were only 12
fatalities but the list below confirms the true scale of this tragedy.
Additionally, some reports suggested that there were WAAF's aboard the
aircraft but this was not so. By a stroke of fate, one of those on board
the aircraft lived in the area of the accident and his death is
registered in his home parish.

Hello:
I hope so much that this reaches the right place. For years I have been
searching for the someone of my mother's family. Her name was Evelyn
Crompton. My grandfather, Edward Crompton, manufactured Crompton's
Headache Powders in Lynn, MA. around the late 1800's and the early
1900's. My mother worked with him in his factory. She was a
seamstress, a single mother, and I heard many stories of my
grandfather's factory, and other family history. Sadly, my mother,
Evelyn died in 1986. And most of her family I'd known growing up have
passed. I recently have been inspired to search, and found this. Much
more I could say. My name is Donna E. Grant. I live in Lynn, MA. I
haven't made time to do a genealogy search. I struggle with roots of
poverty in some way. I have a private practice in Swampscott, MA. I'm
55 in July. Let me know if this is received. I'm continuing my search!
Warmly,
Donna
Hello there,
I'm researching my family tree, i was just wondering if you/or anybody can give me some information on the Alberts family (my dads side).
All that i am aware is that my grandad and his dad (tom alberts) used to
run and own the very large organs that used to visit the
town centre each weekend (i think in the 60s and 70s). Tom also used to own
several traction engines (one named His Lordship and
one named Hiylda) and a factory just off Bury road (Tonge Fold area). I
would really appreciate it if anybody could give me some
info or correspondance relating to my fathers family.
Also....
The Bond family (my mums side) -specifically Henry Bond. Henry bond (my
grandfather) used to live in Denvale with my gran
Shirley. Does anybody know Henry and details about his parents. All that i
am aware is that my grandad was the 8th generation of
Henry's in his family and that there could have been a business/factory
owned by my grandfather's father (also Henry Bond) based
near what is now the Audi/Volkswagen garage.... thats about all i know
about him. I would love to know more.
If anybody does have any information that that would be extremly appreciated.
Thank you
Tom Alberts

Hi my name is Dale Walker and I was born in Bolton in 1951 to Robert Matthew Walker Known as Bob and Winifred Walker, known as Winnie. My father died
of cancer in 1956 and I moved to York along with my mother and sister (Pat)
at the age of 5. I had a large family on my father's side named both Walker and Tonge and I am trying to track down any remaining family. We used to
live on Blackburn Road but I believe I was born in Rossthorn Street. My father frequented a pub there called the Bowling Green and I had an uncle, Sandy Strickland who played piano there in the Bowling Green.
Unfortunately my last contact with any relatives in Bolton was in 1970 and
have not been in touch with any family since then. I Have a daughter who is
21 next year and knows absolutely nothing about her family from my fathers
side which I feel is rather sad plus I have had a desire to go back to my
roots and try and find any remaining family I may have left in Bolton. If a
nyone could perhaps further me any information which could help in my quest
it would be greatly appreciated and you can contact me via my emial addres
s which is dalewalker14@hotmail.com.dele.te or by phone which is York (01904) 62975
3.
With kind regards
Dale Walker

I am originally from Barbados, but lived in Bolton from 1966 to 1978. I attended
Breightmet high school and would love to get in touch with some of my old school
friends. My name is Wendy, some of the names I remember are Hillary and Bobby
Harwood (twins), Damon Vickers, Patricia Atkinson, Paul, Geoff and others. On
Sundays at 7.00 pm we would meet along with other friends Susan Pennington and

anyone from our group.
Hello
I was wondering if you have any photos of Shops on Blackburn Road before
they were demolished in the early 70's?
My grandfather owned a Butcher's shop on Blackburn Road on the corner of
Waterloo Street and we do not have any photos and would dearly love to
find one. The shop was call W.H. Delaney and it was his pride and joy
before it was compulsory purchased by Bolton Council.
Kind Regards

Please put me in your guestbook. I lived in Halliwell from 1973 to 1995
and then moved to Australia.
This site has brought back some wonderful memories: watching the
Wanderers on the televisions in Dixons window on a Saturday; riding your
bike up to Rivington Barn at the week-end; all the wonderful stalls in
the Market Hall; the Water place; the old railway station. I could go
on and on.
I miss the place terribly.

My mother is from Bolton ( she was a Dootson) parents moved to N.Y.
after I was born, every 3 or 4 yrs growing up, we would spend the summer
in Bolton with my grandparents, at one point spent a year there, I went
to Johnson Fold School then briefly at Smithals ( not sure of spelling),
talking early 60's. Those were fond memories would liked to have stayed
and lived in Bolton. Now, I'm looking for the whereabouts of Phillip
Waring he would be in his late 40's, he stayed with us for two summers
in the 70's and I believe moved to the States. Anyone out there knowing
of him would like to here from them. Thanks Paul Hannold
Good Afternoon from Montreal Canada,
I was looking through the Bolton site because my ancestors, from my grandfat
her down, are from Farnworth, it was wonderful to be able to see where they
came from and what their daily lives consisted of. I was wondering if
anyone may know the CHADDERTON, SUDWORTH,JONES,BRIGGS OR DAWSON families
, according to information I have collected, they lived on the following
streets, Georgina, Rosamond, Starcliffe and Lorne. The lastest info I have
is Joyce Chadderton daughter of Ernest chadderton and Mary J Greenhalgh,
born 1923 married Gordon T Briggs in 1945 John Chadderton born 1930 to
Ernest Chadderton and Mary J Greenhalgh Marjorie Sudworth marrying Henry F
Jones in 1945 if anyone has any info that may help with my family research
please contact me at desert_orchid1967@yahoo,ca

Hello

staying at my grandparents house at Lightbounds Rd., neighbors where the

Mary?...I was about ten at the time ( around 1964). My email is
hannolds@cecomet.net.dele.te anyone know of any of these people I would like
to here from them. Thanks Paul Hannold
I should have said, for inclusion in the Guest Book please:
I'm trying to contact Gordon and David Crompton. They are my second
cousins and first cousins to each other. David was born in the Bolton
area in the late 1930s and Gordon in the early 1940s. My late mother
Betty Paul (nee Crompton) thought that David had emigrated to Australia
and Gordon had possibly moved to Bermuda. They are both grandsons of my
maternal grandfather Frank Crompton's eldest brother John William
Crompton. I'd be delighted to hear if anyone has any news of them.
Thank you!
David Paul
I hope you will be able to publish this note on your guest book site. My

Whitebank school. Left school in 1953 and started an apprenticeship in the

work and living on the Mid North Coast of NSW. I would love to hear from
any of my old friends and associates who can remember me to contact me via
e-mail.
I spent many enjoyable hours as a youngster in "Harry Ecks" milk bar on St
Helens road, quite close to the Majestic cinema. If anyone can remember
those old times please drop me a line.
I would just like to say, who ever is responsible for creating the Bolton
Web Site, I think you have done a fine job, a great source of information
for all us ex pats out here.
Cheers ....Alan

Hello from Canada. I just came across your website - thanks for all
of the info. re Bolton, Lancashire. I will be traveling to the area
in summer of 2012, trying to find where my Grandfather Frederick
Woodward, born 1889 in Eagley, Bolton, Lancashire lived. He was a
coal miner, and married Blanche Hibbert (worker in cotton mills) in
1909 in Greater Manchester. He immigrated to Canada May 12, 1910,
with his brother Walter, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and
my grandmother followed him in 1911. He fought for the Canadian
Armed forces in WW1, moved to Toronto after the war. My father
Frederick Woodward was born in 1916, fought in WW11, and was wounded
in Germany, and died in England 1945. Any information of the area
my Grandfather may have lived in, would be appreciated. I have an
address from 1881 census that states 82 Paper Mill Road, but very
likely is no longer there. Just to know the general area would make
my trip worthwhile. Great Grandfather's name was Henry Woodward
(1848) and my Great Grandmother's name was Sara Ann Jones (1849).
Any connection or information anyone would have to my family tree
would be appreciated.
